Understanding the Extended Essay
The extended essay is a key part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. It’s a major piece of independent work where students research a topic of their choice, in a subject of their choice, and write a paper of up to 4,000 words.
Why Does the Extended Essay Matter?
The extended essay helps prepare students for university-level research. It also gives them the chance to explore a topic they genuinely care about—usually connected to one of their IB subjects or, in some cases, an issue that crosses over two different subject areas (this is called a World Studies essay).
Through the process, students build important skills such as:
Asking meaningful and focused questionsInvestigating topics independentlyClearly expressing ideasBuilding and supporting strong arguments These skills help students grow as thinkers and learners, and will benefit them in university and beyond.

How Does It Work
Each student is paired with a teacher (called a supervisor) who guides them through the research and writing process. Along the way, students participate in three required reflection sessions. The final one, known as the viva voce, is a short interview where the student reflects on their learning journey.
In addition to supporting academic development, the extended essay experience can be excellent preparation for university or job interviews, especially in countries where interviews are part of the application process.

How Is It Graded?
The extended essay is externally marked by trained IB examiners on a scale from 0 to 34. Based on this score, students receive a grade in one of the following bands:
A – ExcellentB – GoodC – SatisfactoryD – MediocreE – ElementaryThis grade contributes to the student’s overall IB Diploma result, and a strong performance can positively impact university applications.
